Biodiversity data and ongoing monitoring: A feature in Open Access Government

4 July 2025

B-Cubed is featured in the July edition of the Open Access Government Journal. The Open Access Government Journal is a digital publication providing in-depth perspective on key public policy areas worldwide. It publishes quarterly editions featuring prestigious contributors, including government ministers, members of the European Parliament, industry associations, etc.

B-Cubed’s feature raises the issue of limited capacity for monitoring biodiversity and addressing biodiversity loss. Remote-sensing technologies provide near-real-time data on where ecosystems are changing, however they are unable to gather critical biodiversity metrics on the species affected. On the other hand, biodiversity data which provides taxonomic and ecological detail is usually spatially and temporarily uneven.

The picture cannot be complete until scientists can assess both remotely-obtained data and biodiversity data. In order to resolve this issue, B-Cubed is building biodiversity data cubes, which allow combining Earth observation data and in situ biodiversity data. Integrating this data can lead to better indicators, better models and consequently to a better policy.
