Free online lectures on biodiversity data cubes this October

17 September 2024

B-Cubed believes data cubes have substantial potential to help standardise access to biodiversity data and enhance biodiversity monitoring. By integrating multiple data dimensions — such as taxonomic, temporal and spatial — cubes facilitate a deeper exploration of complex ecological patterns and relationships.

To enable researchers, students, and practitioners to unlock the full potential of data cubes, B-Cubed partners Sandra MacFadyen (Stellenbosch University) and Maarten Trekels (Meise Botanic Garden), in collaboration with the National Institute for Theoretical and Computational Sciences (NITheCS), are leading a free online Mini-School this October.

Presented by the NITheCS Research Programme Advancing Biodiversity Informatics & Ecological Modelling Research, this mini-school features four hands-on lectures that will equip participants with practical skills in biodiversity monitoring and ecological analysis, while encouraging collaboration and openness within the scientific community.

All lectures will take place from 14:00 to 15:00 CET/SAST.

  • 2 October – Introduction to Biodiversity Data and Data Cubes: Fundamentals and Applications

  • 9 October – Building Data Cubes with GBIF: A Hands-On Guide for Biodiversity Monitoring

  • 16 October – Analysing Data Cubes: Techniques and Tools for Ecological Modelling

  • 23 October – Open Science: Sharing and Disseminating Results from Data Cubes

Each lecture will also highlight skills and knowledge that support one or more of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Read more about the mini-school here.
