Quentin Groom's Key Takeaways from the Open-Earth-Monitor Webinar

24 November 2023

In a recent instalment of the monthly science webinars hosted by the Open-Earth-Monitor Project, Quentin Groom – the coordinator of B-Cubed – provided key insights into biodiversity data through the perspective of the project.

B-Cubed aims to aggregate data from the Global Biodiversity Information Facility, in order to facilitate monitoring of larger-scale issues. During the interview, Quentin highlighted the different biases around understanding this data such as taxonomic, geographic, temporal bias and showcased B-Cubed’s approach to smoothing them out. He further emphasised the significant challenge and long-term objective of the project – the creation of underlying infrastructure and code, which could empower smaller, economically challenged countries to adapt it to their specific contexts and create their own biodiversity monitoring.

For a comprehensive understanding of the complexities surrounding biodiversity data and the insights derived from it, watch Quentin's full presentation: "Biodiversity data are really complicated, how do we make sense of them?" available here.
