B-Cubed’s training series continued with a session on Automating compositional dissimilarity and biodiversity turnover mapping with dissmapr. If you want to join the upcoming sessions, you can still register here.
In this fourth session, held on 13 March, Sandra MacFadyen focused on dissmapr, an open-source R framework that automates compositional dissimilarity and turnover analysis.
Applied to butterfly assemblages across South Africa, dissmapr reveals species-sharing patterns overlooked by conventional approaches and produces outputs, such as turnover heatmaps and bioregional delineations, that can be directly aligned with protected area networks to identify compositional fragility, anticipate climate-driven change, and prioritise monitoring.
During the session, participants learned to use dissmapr and operate its features more effectively. You can install dissmapr on: https://github.com/b-cubed-eu/dissmapr
Participants also have access to tutorials and practical guides via the B-Cubed documentation website: https://docs.b-cubed.eu/
Stay tuned for the next session on 20 March → Making use of colorblind friendly maps. Ahead of this session, please install the packages available here: https://github.com/ducciorocchini/b3_colorblindness.
