New B-Cubed deliverable: International Science-Policy Landscape Analysis

8 August 2024

B-Cubed has released a new deliverable titled "International Science-Policy Landscape Analysis". As the global biodiversity policy landscape is intricate, involving numerous international initiatives, conventions, and agreements, this deliverable provides a comprehensive review of key ongoing Multilateral Environmental Agreements (MEAs) and the indicators proposed to track progress towards their respective goals and targets.

During the analysis process, over 600 biodiversity indicators were uncovered, many of which suffer from a lack of established methodology, poor documentation, and limited overlap, which complicates the ability of parties to these conventions to effectively report on their progress. To better understand these challenges, B-Cubed conducted a mapping of stakeholders in the international policy arena and consulted them on their difficulties and needs when using these indicators.

The consultations highlighted a clear need for open workflows, further indicator development, and improved alignment with existing platforms for data hosting and real-time indicator calculation. To better align B-Cubed's products with policy needs, the deliverable suggests developing tools for harmonising datasets, adapting workflows for established indicators, and piloting new workflows for indicators currently lacking standardised methodologies.

In addition, the deliverable confirms that collaboration with global initiatives like GEO BON and UNEP, along with ongoing dialogues with stakeholders, is crucial for the success of B-Cubed in enhancing biodiversity data management and analysis.
